Bill ÷ kWh is an effective average including any fixed charges and taxes. It is not your utility’s energy rate. This comparison does not determine the cause of the increase.
How this tool works
Use the total bill amount, total kWh, and number of billing days shown on each bill. The tool calculates the dollar and percentage changes, along with kWh used per day.
Comparing daily usage helps account for billing periods of different lengths. Comparing total bill divided by kWh can show a change in effective cost per kWh, but this figure includes fees and taxes.
Limitations and next steps
This calculator cannot isolate rate changes, weather, taxes, fixed fees, tiered pricing, or meter errors. A higher effective cost does not necessarily mean the utility raised its energy rate.
Review your bill’s itemized charges and usage history. If the increase is unexplained, contact your utility before attempting electrical repairs.
