Energy calculator

Appliance Energy Cost Calculator

Estimate electricity consumption and cost for a household appliance, then adjust the numbers to match how you actually use it.

Preset wattages are illustrations, not verified ratings for your appliance. Replace with label or measured values.

Watts (W)

USD per kWh

Estimated operating cost

Monthly electricity cost

$1.92

Monthly energy

12 kWh

Annual electricity cost

$23.04

Assumes the same monthly use for 12 months.

Formula: watts ÷ 1,000 × hours/day × days/month × appliance count × USD/kWh. This excludes fixed fees and taxes.

How this tool works

Enter the appliance’s average watts, daily hours, days used per month, quantity, and price per kilowatt-hour. The calculator multiplies these values to estimate monthly kWh and electricity cost.

For example, a 100 W television used four hours daily for 30 days uses 12 kWh. At $0.16 per kWh, the energy-only cost is $1.92.

Limitations and next steps

Actual appliances often cycle between different power levels. A refrigerator’s running power is not its 24-hour average; a dryer or dishwasher also changes power during a cycle. Presets are illustrative only.

Use an appliance energy label, energy-monitor reading, or manufacturer’s annual kWh estimate for better accuracy. Electricity bills may include fixed charges, taxes, and time-of-use rates.
